Alain Prost won the 1986 San Marino Grand Prix for McLaren TAG Porshe on April 27th, 1986. The race, the third of the 1986 Formula 1 season, went for 60 laps (302.400 km) and was the Frenchman’s 22nd victory in F1.
Moreover, it was Prost’s 13th victory for McLaren (out of the 30 wins he achieved with the Woking-based team). Prost started the Grand Prix in Imola in fourth place, having qualified 1.1 seconds off the Pole Position Lap from Ayrton Senna (then driving for Lotus).
Prost won the race ahead of another Brazilian, three-time champion Nelson Piquet (Williams). Austrian driver Gerhard Berger achieved his first podium during that Grand Prix while driving for Benetton.
Berger eventually won 10 Grands Prix in his F1 career, including the 1986 Mexican Grand Prix. It was also Benetton’s first podium.
The victory was the 49th in McLaren history, while Williams were competing in their 150th Grand Prix.
