The British Grand Prix is the oldest Formula 1 World Championship race.
The race is held at Silverstone, the track that hosted the first-ever race of the World Championship back in 1950.
The History of the British Grand Prix
The 1950 British Grand Prix, modern F1’s first race, was held on May 13th, 1950.
The race has had 75 editions, tied with the Italian Grand Prix for the most in Formula 1 history. Apart from Silverstone, two other tracks have hosted the British GP: Aintree (five times) and Brands Hatch (12 times).
Silverstone has hosted the British GP every year since 1987.

Sir Lewis Hamilton has been dominant in his home Grand Prix ever since he entered Formula 1, winning the race a record nine times. Hamilton’s nine wins in the British Grand Prix are an F1 record for most wins in the same Grand Prix.

Hamilton famously won the 2024 race, returning to the top step of an F1 podium for the first time since 2021 (945 days). It was his 104th win.

In terms of home wins, Hamilton ranks first, followed by Alain Prost’s six wins in the French Grand Prix, and Jim Clark’s five victories in the British Grand Prix. Juan Manuel Fangio (Argentina), Nigel Mansell (Great Britain), and Michael Schumacher (Germany) all won their home Grand Prix four times.
In Schumacher’s case, he won the German Grand Prix four times, and also won five European Grands Prix at the Nürburgring, giving him nine total wins in Germany.
Other Notable British Grand Prix Winners
Behind Hamilton, we have two legendary world champions in terms of British GP wins. Two-time F1 champion Jim Clark won at home five times, while four-time champion Alain Prost won five rounds of the British GP.
Another British World Champion, Nigel Mansell won four the British round four times.
Three-time world champions Jack Brabham and Niki Lauda, along with seven-time champion Michael Schumacher won the event three times each.
Unforgettable Races
Clearly, F1’s first race in history was memorable, with Nino Farina winning for Alfa Romeo. Moreover, it was an Alfa Romeo 1-2-3 as Luigi Fagoli and Reg Parnell followed Farina home.
The four Alfa Romeos had qualified 1-2-3-4 for the event, with the legendary Argentinian Juan Manuel Fangio starting the race in third but an oil pipe fail ended his race after 62 laps.
In 1951, another Argentinian, Jose Froilan Gonzales, gave the Scuderia Ferrari its first Formula 1 win, winning the British GP.
In the 1955 race at Aintree, the iconic Sir Stirling Moss won the British GP to take his first F1 victory in a Mercedes 1-2-3-4, with Fangio in second place, just two-tenths behind.
Three-time F1 champion Sir Jackie Stewart won twice at home, in 1969 and 1971.
In the modern era, Nigel Mansell took a famous victory in the 1987 race, battling his teammate Nelson Piquet.
Michael Schumacher’s win in 1998 in the rain was famous as he displayed huge skill and also won while serving a penalty in the pits on the last lap.
Scottish driver David Coulthard won in consecutive years for McLaren in 1999 and 2000, while World Champions Mika Hakkinen (2001) Fernando Alonso (2006, 2011), Kimi Raikkonen (2007), Sebastian Vettel (2009, 2018) and Nico Rosberg (2013) also won British GP events since 2000.
Hamilton took arguably his greatest victory in F1 in 2008 when he dominated the rain at Silverstone with a 1:08.577 min gap over second place and lapping the entire field except for the podium finishers.
Carlos Sainz took his first F1 win in 2022, while three-time champion Max Verstappen won in 2023, before Hamilton’s famous return to victory in 2024.
