The History Behind Ayrton Senna’s 1991 Helmet
Ayrton Senna entered the 1991 Formula 1 season fresh off winning his second championship in 1990 in a heated fight against Ferrari driver, and former teammate, Alain Prost.
The title fight was decided at Suzuka in 1991 with Senna and Prost colliding at the start.
Into the 1991 season, many expected another Senna-Prost clash, but Nigel Mansell and Williams also wanted to join the party.
In 1991, en route to winning his third and final F1 championship, Senna won seven of the 16 races in the season. Moreover, he did it while wearing his iconic yellow helmet. The 1991 version only had slight changes in terms of the coloring of sponsorship logos, as was usual with Senna’s F1 helmet.
Ayrton Senna’s 1991 Season
Senna again sealed the F1 championship during a race in Suzuka, in the 1991 Japanese Grand Prix. It was a season-long fight against Williams and Nigel Mansell, but Senna won it by taking seven wins, eight Pole Positions and 12 podiums in the 16-race campaign.
Senna’s seven victories in the 1991 Formula 1 season, with his 1991 helmet, came at these Grands Prix:
He started the season with four consecutive wins at the 1991 United States Grand Prix, the 1991 Brazilian Grand Prix (one of his most emotional wins, due to it being his first at home), the 1991 San Marino Grand Prix and the 1991 Monaco Grand Prix.
The other three victories came in the Hungarian, Belgian and Australian Grands Prix.

Features of Ayrton Senna’s 1991 Helmet
Ayrton Senna’s 1991 Formula 1 helmet was from Honda’s helmet brand, Rheos. His 1990 F1 helmet was also Rheos.
Symbolism in the Design
In terms of the yellow, blue and green in the helmet, legendary painter Sid Mosca once explained that the yellow meant youth, with the other colors representing movement and aggression. Of course, the colors are also part of the Brazilian culture.
Fans’ Memories of 1991
The 1991 season was not like the previous three years, with duels for the title between Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost. However, Williams and Nigel Mansell put up a solid fight against McLaren.
Mansell won five races in the season, including a stretch with three consecutive victories midway through the year.
Many fans have described that season as a preview of what was to come from Williams, with the team dominating the following two campaigns with Mansell and Alain Prost.
