Hakkinen’s typical helmet design, which he chose in his karting days, includes the colors of the Finnish flag. This is an exact replica of the helmet worn by F1 Grand Prix-winner Gunnar Nilsson in the 1976 season, his first in F1.

The helmet is mainly white  but includes a yellow/blue section going from the front to the back. The colors were a homage to Nilsson’s home country, Sweden. Moreover, the sides include his last name.

In 1976, Nilsson went to Formula 1 with Lotus after winning the 1975 British Formula Three. He achieved two third places that year and went on to win a race the following season, the 1977 Belgian GP.

Sadly, Nilsson retired from Formula 1 due to a testicular cancer diagnosis which took his life on October 20th, 1978.
