The 2022 Mexico City Grand Prix will be celebrated in the upcoming Sunday, October 30th, and it will be a special day of Formula 1 racing, as usual. Moreover, Saturday will also be a celebration, as the driver who sets the fastest time in qualifying will receive special replica helmets of historic drivers.
The Mexican round of the F1 championship takes place in the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. The track is named after racing drivers Ricardo and Pedro Rodríguez, who both competed in Formula 1.
The first Formula 1 race at Mexico came back in 1962, with Jim Clark and Trevor Taylor winning for Lotus. It was a non-championship race, but it was the first at Mexico and the 2022 event will celebrate 60 years of that iconic event.
To celebrate such a milestone, the 2022 Mexico City GP organizers colaborated with the Fangio Foundation (in honor of the Argentine legend Juan Manuel Fangio) and will award certified replicas of the helmets worn by both Ricardo and Pedro Rodríguez in their F1 careers.
Ricardo was and still is the youngest driver in the Scuderia Ferrari’s F1 history, at 19 years and 208 days when he made his debut back in the 1961 Italian GP. Ricardo died on November 1st, 1962, at the track which is named after him now due to a crash.
Pedro, on his side, competed in Formula 1 from 1963 until his death in a sports car race in 1971 in Germany. Pedro achieved several good results in F1, as he won the 1967 South African GP and the 1970 Belgian GP at Spa-Francorchamps for Cooper and BRM, respectively..
He drove Ferrari, Lotus, Cooper and BRM cars in Formula 1.
Last year, the Mexico City GP organizers and the Fangio Foundation awarded the pole-sitter with a replica of the helmet worn by five-time F1 champion Juan Manuel Fangio.
Obviously, helmets from that era weren’t full-face helmets, but they remain incredible pieces of art, bravery and proof of how difficult motor racing was back in the 1950s and 1960s.
CM Helmets has every full-face design created in Formula 1 history, and we will also be eager to see the special helmets for the 2022 Mexico GP and recreate them for our loyal Happy Customers.
