The 2021 Formula 1 World Championship season was decided in the final race of the year, at Abu Dhabi. F1 crowned Max Verstappen (Red Bull) as its new champion after a year-long battle with seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton.
It was the 30th occasion the WDC fight went into the final Grand Prix of the season, and only the second time that the two contenders entered the final weekend tied on points (it previously happened in 1974).
Moreover, it was the first time we saw such a fight since 2016, and the first hard-fought battle for the World Drivers’ Championship between two teams since 2018, when Ferrari competed against Mercedes.
Since 2000, it was the ninth season that saw two or more drivers with chances to win the championship until the final race, which previously happened in 2003, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2012, and 2014.
